Travel insurance
Before you go on a trip, take care of comprehensive travel insurance. It provides protection against unexpected events, such as trip cancellation, emergency medical assistance and lost luggage.
Passport and visa
Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months after your travel date. Check if you need a visa to enter Montenegro based on your citizenship (EU citizens do not need visas, you can also travel with an ID card).
Health precautions
Carry essential medicines and other important supplies with you, which may be difficult to obtain in a foreign country.
Currency and payment methods
Montenegro uses the euro (EUR). Credit cards are widely accepted, but in smaller establishments it is advisable to have some cash.
Customs and etiquette
When visiting religious sites, dress more modestly. Greet locals with a friendly “zdravo” (hello) or “dobar dan” (good day).
Transport
If you are renting a car, book it in advance, especially during the season. Be prepared for narrow and winding roads, especially in mountainous areas. During the season it can be difficult with parking spaces. Most parking spaces are paid, you can pay in both cash and card.
Language barrier
Although English is mostly spoken, learn a few basic phrases in Montenegrin. This shows respect and can be useful.
Security
Montenegro is basically safe, but be careful in tourist areas and watch out for pickpockets. Keep your belongings safe and avoid displaying valuables.
Payments
When paying for services or goods in grocery stores, gas stations, paying for car parking services, check the change and ask for a receipt.
Weather conditions
Depending on the weather conditions, take care of suitable clothing. In Montenegro, due to the geographical location, the weather can change quite quickly, especially when traveling in the mountains.
Photocopies and digital copies
Make photocopies of important documents (passport, travel insurance, etc.). Keep digital copies securely in cloud storage.
Culture
respect local customs and traditions. Before photographing people, ask for permission.
Internet
Montenegro is not an EU member, so if you want to have a lot of cheap internet you can buy 500 GB of internet for 15 EUR in all Tabacco shops. You can also take care of internet using eSIM service (Airalo, Holafly, Saily), this service is usually more expensive, but more convenient for those who do not want to physically insert another SIM card.
